What’s actually going on with euro cylinders
A standard euro cylinder is a brass or nickel-plated tube that sits in your door lock. It’s cheap to make and cheap to fit, which is why builders use them as standard. But cheap also means weak.
The snap point is just behind the external face of the cylinder. Apply sideways pressure and twisting force, and the cylinder breaks cleanly. Once it snaps, the internal mechanism is exposed and a burglar can manipulate the lock from inside the barrel. Lock defeated. Door open. No alarm, no noise, no sign of a crowbar.
It’s a vulnerability that’s been known for years, and it hasn’t gone away because thousands of homes still have unprotected cylinders fitted.
What to do, and what not to do
First: don’t ignore it because you’ve never had a break-in. We speak to people after a burglary who say exactly that. Prevention is cheaper than replacement and rebuilding trust.
Second: don’t assume your lock is safe just because it looks solid. The cylinder is the weak point, not the door or the frame. A five-year-old Chubb or Yale cylinder on a new composite door is still vulnerable if it’s not anti-snap rated.
What you do: upgrade to an anti-snap cylinder. These are engineered to resist snapping by using harder metals and a reinforced pin mechanism that breaks away cleanly if force is applied. The lock stays intact and functional. Burglar moves on to an easier target.
