What goes wrong with window security
- UPVc window keys lost — owner doesn’t know they were ever there, treats the window as ‘always unlocked’
- Sash jammers missing on sash windows — old sash windows are climbed-through routinely
- Bedroom windows above flat roofs — opportunist climbs the kitchen extension
- Ventilation locks not fitted — meaning windows must be either fully shut or fully open (people leave them open)
- Cracked window-lock cogs — lock turns but doesn’t engage anything

Sash jammers
For wooden sash windows. Discreet little brackets that prevent the lower sash being pushed up from outside, even when unlocked. £25-£35 fitted.
Ventilation locks
Lets the window open 4 inches for fresh air, no further. Critical for ground-floor and flat-roof-adjacent windows. £20-£30 fitted per window.
Restrictor stays
Ideal for upstairs windows in homes with young children. Window can’t open more than ~10cm — meets child safety guidelines and is also burglary-deterrent. £25 each fitted.
Sash window mortice bolts
Hidden surface-mounted bolts that lock the upper and lower sashes together. Old-school but effective. £20-£30 per window.
Insurance check
Most home insurance policies require window locks on all accessible windows (ground floor + first floor over flat roofs/extensions/etc.). Check your policy. If you’re missing locks, you might have unknowingly been uninsured for window break-ins. Free check during any other visit.
Common-sense tips
- Never leave windows open when you go out, even ‘just to the shops’
- Don’t leave keys in window locks visible from outside — easy steal through the letterbox or vent
- Bedroom over a flat roof? Treat it as a ground-floor window for security
- Don’t rely on the latch — a window ‘on the latch’ is unlocked
