In short: Most break-ins are opportunist, so the biggest wins are cheap and simple: fit an anti-snap euro cylinder on your uPVC door, make sure exit doors meet BS3621 for your insurance, lock gates and sheds, and add a doorbell camera and motion lights as deterrents. A free home security check tells you exactly where you stand.

Most break-ins are not the work of a master criminal. They are opportunists trying the easy doors and windows first and moving on the moment something looks like hard work. The good news is that a few sensible upgrades make your home the one they walk past. This is our plain English hub for everything that keeps a Southampton or Waterside home secure. No jargon, no scare tactics, just what actually works.

The short version:

  • Most break-ins are opportunist, easy doors and windows tried first
  • Fit an anti-snap euro cylinder on uPVC doors
  • Exit doors should meet BS3621 for your insurance
  • Lock gates and sheds, do not store tools outside
  • Add a doorbell camera and motion lights as deterrents
  • Free home security check tells you where you stand

Think in layers

Good home security is not one gadget, it is layers. A burglar has to get through your boundary, then past a deterrent, then through a door or window, then back out with their hands full, all without being seen. Every layer you add makes you a worse bet than the house next door. You do not need to spend a fortune. You need each layer doing its job. The sections below run through them in the order that matters.

Locks and British Standards

Your locks are the front line. For most insurers the magic words are British Standard BS3621 on final exit doors, and for euro cylinders you want anti-snap protection to TS007 three star, or a one star cylinder paired with a three star handle. If that already sounds like a foreign language, our lock standards explained page breaks every one of those down, and our insurance approved locks guide tells you what your policy is likely to demand.

uPVC doors, where most of the risk hides

Around here, most homes have uPVC doors, and the weak point is usually the euro cylinder. An old, cheap cylinder can be snapped with a pair of mole grips in seconds, and it is the single most common way modern homes get broken into. Upgrading to an anti-snap cylinder is one of the cheapest, highest-impact things you can do, often under the cost of a takeaway for the family. If your handle is sagging or the door is hard to lock, that is a multipoint issue we fix every day on our uPVC door repair visits, and a door that is hard to lock is a door people stop bothering to lock properly.

Windows, the forgotten entry point

Ground floor and easily reached windows matter as much as doors. Key-locking handles, working espagnolette mechanisms and laminated glass on vulnerable windows all help. A window left on the night vent is an open invitation, particularly at the back of a property where no one can see. Our window lock specialist service sorts seized or missing window locks so every opening on the ground floor actually locks.

Gardens, gates, sheds and garages

The bit people forget. A burglar loves a side gate that is not locked, because it hides them from the street while they work on the back door, and a shed full of your own tools to break in with. Lock the gate, lock the shed, and do not store ladders or spades where they can be used against you. A secure garage matters too, since many connect straight through to the house.

Key safes done properly

A key safe is brilliant for carers, holiday lets and trusted family, but a cheap one off a market stall is an open invitation, often forced in under a minute. We fit police approved, Sold Secure key safes in the right spot, out of obvious sight, so the convenience does not become the weak link.

Alarms, cameras and lighting

Visible deterrents work. A doorbell camera, a couple of motion lights and a maintained alarm tell an opportunist to try somewhere else. You do not need a fortune spent on a fancy system. You need the basics, placed well and actually switched on. Through the darker months, when most break-ins happen, a few timed lights that make the house look lived in do more than people expect. We are happy to point you at sensible kit during a visit rather than sell you something you do not need.

After a break-in, or to prevent one

If the worst has happened, getting safe and lockable again comes first. We cover burglary repair and boarding up across the Waterside, often the same day. If you would rather never need that, the fastest way to know where you stand is our free home security check, an honest walk round your doors, windows and locks with clear advice on what is fine and what is worth doing. For deeper reading, the Keywise blog covers real jobs and lessons from around the Waterside, the Locksmith Advice Centre helps when something is already going wrong, and our Locksmith Glossary explains any term you are unsure of.

Frequently asked questions

What is the single best home security upgrade?

For most uPVC homes around here it is fitting an anti-snap euro cylinder. It is inexpensive and removes the most common weak point that opportunist burglars exploit.

Do I need an alarm and CCTV?

They help as visible deterrents, but they are not a substitute for good locks. Get the doors and windows right first, then add cameras and lighting as deterrents.

Are cheap key safes safe to use?

Not really. A cheap key safe can be forced in under a minute. We fit police approved Sold Secure rated key safes and place them out of obvious sight.

What about my windows and back gate?

They matter as much as the front door. Key-locking window handles and a locked side gate and shed remove the cover and easy access a burglar relies on.

Can you check my home and tell me what needs doing?

Yes. Our free home security check is exactly that, an honest walk round your doors, windows and locks with clear advice on what is worth doing.

Will better security lower my insurance?

It can, and more importantly it keeps your policy valid. Many insurers require BS3621 locks, so meeting that standard protects both your home and any future claim.

When do most break-ins happen?

More happen through the darker autumn and winter evenings, when homes look empty after dark. Timed lights and visible deterrents make a real difference in that period.
