Free Home Security Check, Southampton & Waterside

Bugsy walks round your home with you, in plain English, points out weak spots and the cheap fixes for each. No obligation, no upsell, no charge. Built up over years of community crime-prevention work.

Free — no obligation

The short version. Free Home Security Check with Keywise is free — no obligation, and any price is agreed before work begins, with no call-out fee and no VAT. For anything urgent I aim to be with you in around 30 minutes across Southampton and the Waterside, and the number you call is answered by Bugsy himself.

Bugsy spends a lot of time doing this for elderly Watersiders who’d never otherwise get a proper security review. The Police & Crime Commissioner Award in 2024 was largely for this work. We’ve kept it free for everyone since.

What a free security check is, and isn’t:

What it IS

  • A proper walk-round of your home, inside and out, by a qualified locksmith
  • An honest assessment of the weak points, not the worst-case scaremongering some firms do
  • Plain-English explanation of what each issue means and what it would actually cost to fix
  • A written summary you can keep, on a single page
  • Time to ask questions about anything, including general home security advice

What it ISN’T

  • A sales pitch, we don’t quote unless you ask, and you can take the report and fix things yourself if you prefer
  • A 90-minute upsell on alarm systems and CCTV, we don’t sell those (we refer to Waterside Network partners for that)
  • Limited to elderly customers, anyone in our coverage area is welcome
  • A trick to get into your house, we’ll never ask you to leave us alone with anything

Typical things we find on a check

  1. Cylinder not 3-star, single biggest issue, fixable for £45-£60
  2. BS3621 missing on a final exit door, invalidates insurance, fixable for £90 fitted
  3. uPVC door dropped, handle hard to lift, will fail soon, fixable for £60
  4. Window locks missing or broken, common entry point, £20-£40 each
  5. Spare key under a plant pot, burglars know every clever spot. Get a key safe instead
  6. Letterbox too close to door handle, letterbox tools can lift keys hung inside
  7. No outdoor lighting, PIR lights are £30-£50 fitted, biggest single deterrent
  8. Side gate not locked or weak, often the actual entry point, locks ignored
  9. Garden tools left in plain sight, provides what burglars use to attack the door

What you do with the report

Up to you. If you want us to fix any of it, we’ll quote for the work, written, no obligation. If you want to do it yourself, the report tells you what to buy and how to fit it. If you want to leave it, that’s fine too, at least you know.

Especially useful for

  • Elderly residents living alone, we explain things slowly, no jargon, no sales pressure
  • Carers worried about a relative’s home, we can do the visit while you’re at work, send you the report
  • New homeowners, buying somewhere, checking what the previous owners left behind
  • Holiday let / Airbnb hosts, making sure guest security is properly thought through
  • Anyone whose insurance just renewed with new clauses, checking compliance

Common questions

What happens during a free home security check in Southampton?

Bugsy walks round the whole property, inside and out, and looks at every realistic weak point: door cylinders, locks, window catches, side gates, lighting, letterboxes, the lot. You get a plain-English explanation of anything he finds, what it actually means, and a single-page written summary to keep. He won’t quote for work unless you ask, and there’s no pressure to use Keywise at all. Most checks take around 45 minutes.

Is the home security check really free, no hidden call-out fee?

Genuinely free. No call-out fee, no charge for the written report, no obligation to book any work. Bugsy has kept it free since he started doing this for elderly residents across the Waterside and New Forest area, it’s not a lead-generation trick dressed up as a freebie. If you do want anything fixed afterwards, you’ll get a written quote up front before any work starts. Nothing changes hands unless you want it to.

Who is the free security check suitable for in the Waterside and Hampshire area?

Anyone with a property in the coverage area, Southampton, Hythe, Totton, Fawley, and the wider Waterside and New Forest patch. Bugsy does a lot of checks for elderly residents living alone and for carers who want to know a relative’s home is sound. New homeowners, holiday let hosts, and anyone whose insurance has just renewed with new clauses will find it just as useful. It’s not limited to any one type of customer.

Can I book a home security check for an elderly relative if I can’t be there?

Yes, and it happens regularly. Bugsy can visit while you’re at work and send the written report directly to you, or to both of you, whichever is easier. He’s used to explaining things slowly and without jargon to residents who’d find a fast-talking salesman uncomfortable. His 2024 Police and Crime Commissioner Community Volunteer Award was largely for exactly this kind of work with older Watersiders. Call 07453 327708 to arrange a slot.

Everyone round here calls me Bugsy, and I still answer my own phone, day or night. I got into this trade because I could not stand hearing how people were treated at the worst moment, locked out, broken into, or a door that failed when they needed it most, and then charged the earth for it. So I do it the other way. I tell you straight what a job needs and what it does not, I fix rather than replace where I can, and I never add a call-out fee or VAT. In 2024 the Hampshire Police and Crime Commissioner named me Community Volunteer of the Year, and that one meant the most, because it came from the community I work in. No call centre, no script, just me and the van.
