Why the night latch matters
On most timber front doors the night latch is what you rely on every day. You pull the door shut, it clicks, and that is the only thing holding it. Trouble is, a lot of the older rim latches offer next to no real security. They can be slipped, forced or drilled, and plenty of them are not the British Standard type your insurer wants to see. If your policy asks for a BS3621 lock and you have not got one, a claim after a break-in can get awkward. Upgrading the latch sorts that in one visit.
When I fit the new latch I take the old one off cleanly, put the British Standard rim night latch on properly, supply the keys and re-test the door so it locks and closes the way it should. If the door has dropped or the frame has moved over the years I will tell you straight whether the latch is enough on its own or whether the door needs a bit of attention too.
