Watch any UK burglary documentary and you’ll see the same trick: a pair of mole grips on the cylinder, a short twist, a snap. They’re inside in under 20 seconds. No alarm, no smashed glass, no neighbours noticing. It’s the most common UPVc door break-in technique in Britain, and most homes are still fitted with cylinders that fail to it instantly.

The fix is genuinely cheap, fast, and complete: a 3-star (TS007 or Sold Secure Diamond) anti-snap euro cylinder. Fitted in 20 minutes. From £150 fitted, quoted on the phone before I come out. After that, the snap technique simply doesn’t work, the cylinder is engineered to break in a controlled way that leaves the locking mechanism intact.
How lock snapping actually works
Older euro cylinders (the brass cylinder you slot the key into on a UPVc door) have a weak point at the centre, where the cam sits. A burglar grips the protruding cylinder with mole grips, applies leverage, and the cylinder snaps in half. Once broken, the cam pops out and the door unlocks. The whole technique takes 10-30 seconds and produces almost no sound.
If your cylinder protrudes more than 3mm beyond the handle escutcheon, even more so. Burglars target houses where they can see the cylinder sticking out from the street.
What 3-star anti-snap does differently
- Sacrificial sections, the cylinder is engineered so it breaks at a spot where the locking mechanism is still protected
- Hardened steel inserts, drill-resistant, can’t bypass the breakage point
- Anti-pick pins, defeats lock-picking attempts
- Anti-bump, defeats key-bumping (a silent technique using a specially cut bump key)
- Snap-secure tested, independently tested under attack conditions and certified to TS007:3 or Sold Secure Diamond
Why this is the best £150 you’ll spend on home security
You can spend £400 on an alarm, £600 on CCTV, £200 on a smart doorbell, and still have a £15 cylinder a 14-year-old could snap. Get the cylinder right first. Everything else is layer two.

How to tell if your cylinder is at risk
Look at the cylinder face on your front door. If you see any kitemark numbers stamped on it, particularly TS007:3 (3 stars) or Sold Secure Diamond, you’re protected. If it’s plain brass with no markings, or marked TS007:1 (1 star), you’re vulnerable.

Insurance benefit

Almost certainly, yes. The vast majority of UPVc doors in Hampshire use a standard euro profile cylinder, the same oval shape, just a different quality grade inside. I measure up and confirm the right size before fitting, so there’s no guesswork. The swap takes around 20 minutes and your existing handle, door furniture, and keys all stay as they are. How do I know if my front door lock can be snapped?
Look at the face of the cylinder, the oval bit your key goes into. If it’s plain brass with no markings, or stamped TS007:1, it’s vulnerable to snapping. If it shows TS007:3 (three stars) or Sold Secure Diamond, you’re already protected. Also check whether the cylinder protrudes more than 3mm beyond the handle plate, the more it sticks out, the easier it is to grip with mole grips. When I visit, I’ll check yours free of charge. Does my home insurance require an anti-snap lock?
I cannot tell you, and I would be wary of any locksmith who says he can. Some policies say something about final exit door locks, some say nothing, and I am a locksmith, not your insurer. Pull out your policy and read the security section, or ring them and ask. If they want a 3-star cylinder, that is a small job for me.
