Keywise is not just a business that happens to be on the Waterside. We are part of it, and we put real time into helping the area stay secure. This page explains the crime awareness work we do, and the simple lessons from it that you can use at home today.
The short version:
- Most Waterside break-ins are opportunist and easily preventable
- Fit an anti-snap euro cylinder, the top weak point
- Lock your back gate and shed, add a camera and motion light
- Never leave a key in a cheap safe or under a mat
- Risk is highest in dark winter evenings and over holidays
- Same-day burglary repair and boarding up across the Waterside
What we see locally
Most break-ins around Southampton and the Waterside are opportunist rather than planned. Insecure back gates, unlocked sheds, euro cylinders that snap in seconds, and doors left on the latch are the patterns we see again and again, from Totton across to Hythe, Holbury and Fawley. The encouraging part is that almost all of it is preventable with cheap, simple changes, which is exactly the message we try to get out into the community.
The community work behind the award
Bugsy was named Police and Crime Commissioner Community Volunteer of the Year in 2024, and a lot of that comes down to crime awareness work. That means talking to residents groups and sheltered schemes, helping older and vulnerable neighbours secure their homes, and getting burgled families back to safe and lockable the same day. You can read more on the community award page.
Simple prevention that genuinely works
If you do nothing else, do these. Fit an anti-snap euro cylinder on your uPVC door, because the old ones are the number one weak point. Lock your back gate and shed, since that is where the cover and the tools to break in are often found. Put a doorbell camera and a motion light at the front, as visible deterrents send opportunists elsewhere. And never leave a key in a cheap key safe or under a mat. For the detail behind each of these, our Home Security Knowledge Centre walks through it, and the lock standards page explains what good actually looks like.
Darker months and holidays
Risk is not flat across the year. More break-ins happen through the dark autumn and winter evenings, when houses look empty after sunset, and around holidays when homes sit unattended. A couple of timed lights, a paused delivery, and a neighbour keeping an eye do more than any gadget. We are always happy to talk this through before you go away.
If you have already been targeted
If you have been broken into, your first priority is getting safe and lockable again. We do burglary repair and boarding up across the Waterside, often the same day, and we will make sure the property is properly secure before we leave. Then, when you are ready, we will help you close the gap the burglar found so it does not happen again.
Working with the community
If you run a residents association, a community group or support vulnerable people locally, we are always glad to help with security advice or a talk. Get in touch and we will sort something out. Keeping the Waterside secure is everyone’s job, and we are happy to do our bit.
Frequently asked questions
What kind of crime awareness work does Keywise do?
We talk to residents and community groups about burglary prevention, help vulnerable neighbours secure their homes, and get burgled families safe and lockable again, often the same day.
What is the most common weak point you see locally?
Old euro cylinders on uPVC doors that can be snapped in seconds. Upgrading to an anti-snap cylinder is the single best cheap improvement most homes can make.
When is burglary risk highest?
Through the darker autumn and winter evenings, and around holidays when homes are empty. Timed lights and a watchful neighbour make a real difference in those periods.
I have been burgled, can you help today?
Yes. We carry out burglary repairs and boarding up across the Waterside, usually the same day, and make sure your property is properly secure before we leave.
Can you give a security talk to our community group?
Absolutely. We are always happy to help residents associations and community groups with practical, affordable security advice. Just get in touch.
