A proper office lock upgrade starts with understanding what you’re protecting. Most business owners think a new lock means buying something shinier. It doesn’t. It means matching the right hardware to how your premises actually gets used, who needs access, and what’s worth protecting inside.
The short answer
A proper office lock upgrade starts with how your premises is actually used, not with a shinier lock. Most offices run on standard cylinders or basic multipoint locks; match the hardware to the doors that matter and don’t spend in the wrong places.

We’ve sorted hundreds of office upgrades across Southampton, Hythe, Totton and the Waterside. The pattern is always the same: businesses either do nothing until something goes wrong, or they spend money in the wrong places. Neither works.
What’s actually going on with your current locks
Most office doors we see are fitted with standard pin tumbler cylinders or basic multipoint locks. They work fine until they don’t. Wear happens quietly. A lock can feel normal to use for months and then suddenly jam, or worse, become easier to open than it should be.
The real risk isn’t usually the lock itself. It’s whether everyone who’s ever had a key still has it. Previous managers, contractors, cleaners, tenants. Key control is where most businesses fail. You can have the best lock in the world, but if ten people hold copies, it’s useless.
What to do, and what not to
Start here: do an honest audit of who holds keys and who needs actual access right now. Write it down. Then walk your premises and think about what needs securing most. Server rooms. Filing areas. Cash handling spaces. Not every door needs a high-security upgrade.
Good upgrades often include:
- Swapping to keyed-alike systems where you use one key for multiple doors (cuts down key clutter)
- Anti-snap cylinders if you’ve got exposed external doors
- Restricting blank availability so you control who copies keys
- Moving to keypad or card access for high-turnover areas instead of traditional locks
What not to do: don’t upgrade locks without thinking about key management. Don’t assume an expensive lock solves a behaviour problem. Don’t leave old spare keys lying around after you’ve changed the cylinder.
How we sort it on the day
A proper commercial locksmith in Southampton will survey your premises first. No charge for that. We walk the building, look at traffic flow, talk to whoever uses the doors daily. Then we quote you upfront, no VAT, and tell you straight what’s worth doing and what isn’t.
Most upgrades happen without disrupting your day. Non-destructive entry first. New cylinders fitted in under an hour. Keys and documentation handed over, job done.
We also changed the locks and secured the new headquarters of Age Concern New Forest.
