Most Common uPVC Door Faults We See in Southampton, Keywise locksmith Southampton

uPVC doors are tough, but they fail in the same ways most of the time. We get called out to Southampton, Hythe, Totton, and across the Waterside because the mechanism wears out, the frame moves, or the lock stops engaging properly. Knowing what to look for means you catch it before you’re locked out at midnight.

What’s actually going on inside your door

A uPVC door lock has several moving parts. The multipoint lock operates a series of hooks and bolts that shoot into the frame when you turn the key. The gearbox converts your key turn into upward and sideways movement. The cylinder is what your key actually goes into. When any of these parts wear, sticks, or align badly, the whole thing feels stiff or won’t turn at all.

The frame itself can also shift. Temperature changes make uPVC expand and contract. If your door was fitted badly or the building has settled, the frame moves slightly out of square. That tiny gap means the lock bolts don’t hit home properly. You’ll notice the door feels loose or rattles.

What to do, and what not to do

First rule: don’t force a stiff lock. Forcing it breaks the gearbox inside, which makes it a bigger repair. If your key feels tight or sticky, stop turning and try something else.

Clean the lock first. Spray a small amount of dry lubricant (silicone-based, not oil) into the cylinder. Work the key in and out gently a few times. Sometimes that’s enough.

Check the door closes smoothly. If it sticks at the top or bottom, the frame has moved. You might need the hinges adjusted before any lock work will help.

If the door rattles or feels loose in the frame, the problem isn’t the lock mechanism itself. It’s how the door sits.

How we sort it on the day

We start by examining what actually happens when you turn the key. Does the lock engage? Does the door open and close smoothly? We check the frame alignment and the bolts on the hinges. Most of the time it’s either a worn gearbox, a cylinder that needs replacing, or hinges that need adjustment. We quote upfront, no drama. If it’s a lock repair we can handle on the spot, we tell you straight. If the frame needs work beyond a locksmith’s scope, we’ll say so.

When to call us

Ring us if the key won’t turn at all, if the lock engages but the door won’t close properly, or if you’ve forced it and now it’s jammed. We cover Southampton, the Waterside, and all the way to Lymington and the New Forest. Day or night, no call-out fee.
