A lot of these go in for someone’s mum or dad. If you’re sorting a key safe so carers or family can get in to an elderly relative, the common one round here, and often after a hospital discharge, being DBS-checked means I’m not a stranger you’re handing a spare to. A good one, fitted right, yes. A cheap one off the internet, screwed to soft render, no. The ones I fit meet a recognised security standard, Sold Secure (a Master Locksmiths Association scheme) or Police Preferred Specification (the Secured by Design police standard). They’re built to resist being prised, snapped or drilled, and insurers take them seriously. If a key safe is a condition on your policy, check the exact wording with your insurer, but an approved unit is what they’ll be looking for. How is a key safe fitted?
Nothing complicated, but there’s a right way. Start to finish it’s about half an hour:
- Location first. I look at where it should go, solid brick or masonry wall, sensible height, not the first place someone glances when they walk up to your door.
- Fixed to last. Brick or render, I use the correct fixings and bolt it through so it’s not being pulled off.
- Code set and shown. I set your code with you and show you how to change it, after a carer leaves, a guest checks out, whenever.
- Done in one visit. Supplied and fitted, roughly half an hour, £150 and I’m gone.
