Quick answer: Walk round tonight and check the basics. Close each door, lift the handle, then turn and remove the key so the multipoint lock fully engages. Test windows are shut and locked, especially ground floor ones, and make sure side gates and sheds are secured. Five minutes now saves real trouble.

Most of us never really look at our own homes the way a burglar might. We come in, drop our keys, and get on with the evening. But a quick walk around your own place can tell you a lot, and it costs nothing but five minutes of your time.

I have been fitting and repairing locks across Southampton and the Waterside for years now, and the truth is that many break-ins are not the work of criminal masterminds. They happen because a door was not fully locked, a window was left on the latch, or a side gate was hanging open. So tonight, before you settle down, take a walk round and give your home the once-over. Here is how I would do it.

Start with your front and back doors

Doors are the first thing I check, because they are the first thing most intruders test. Go to your front door and close it properly, then lift the handle and turn the key. On a multipoint lock, you should feel the hooks and bolts engage all the way up and down the frame. If you can push or rattle the door and it moves in the frame, the seal has probably worn or the alignment has drifted, and that is worth sorting.

A word on habit here. A lot of people with uPVC doors lift the handle but never turn the key. That leaves the door on the latch only, which offers very little resistance. Always turn the key and take it out of the barrel at night. Then do exactly the same at the back door, which is often the weaker point because it faces the garden and is out of sight from the street.

While you are there, look at the hinges and the frame. Any splits in the wood around the lock, loose screws, or a door that drops when you open it all point to a weak spot. These are small jobs when you catch them early and much bigger ones after somebody has forced their way through.

How safe are your windows really?

Windows are the part people forget. Walk round every room and check that each window is shut and locked, not just pulled to. Ground floor windows and any that can be reached from a flat roof, a bin, or a garden wall are the ones to focus on. If your windows have key locks, ask yourself where those keys actually are. Leaving them sitting in the lock defeats the whole point.

Look at the older windows too. If you have any that no longer lock at all, or the handle spins without gripping, make a note of them. Small ground floor windows, like the ones in a downstairs toilet or a kitchen, get overlooked because we assume nobody could climb through. You would be surprised. Fresh air is lovely, but an open window on a warm night is an open invitation, so close them before bed even upstairs if there is easy access.

Check your patio and bifold doors as well. These have their own locking points and they can slip out of adjustment over time. Give them a firm push once locked and make sure there is no give.

Do not forget the gates, sheds and outside lights

Now step outside. A side gate that swings open gives someone a private, hidden route to your back door, and it also lets them help themselves to whatever is in the garden. Fit a decent bolt or a padlock and use it. The same goes for your shed and garage, because that is where the ladders, tools and bikes live, and those tools can be used to get into the house itself.

Have a look at your lighting too. A dark path or a shadowy corner is a gift to anyone who does not want to be seen. A simple motion sensor light near the back door or side passage makes a real difference and costs very little. Then stand at the end of your drive and look back at the house. Can you see valuables through the front window? A laptop or car keys on the hall table are easy to spot and easy to want.

When to bring in a professional

Your five-minute check will flag most of the obvious things, but some issues need a trained eye. Worn barrels, doors that do not meet the standard your policy names, or locks that are not snap resistant are not always easy to judge yourself. That is where I come in, and I am happy to talk you through what I find without any pressure.

I offer a proper walk round as part of my free home security check in Southampton, where I look at your doors, windows and access points and tell you honestly what is fine and what could be better. There is no call-out fee, and I am available 24 hours, so if your check tonight throws up something that worries you, give me a shout.

Do the five-minute walk now while it is fresh in your mind. Lock the doors, turn the keys, close the windows, bolt the gate. It is a small habit that keeps your home a great deal safer.

Could a thief hook your keys through the letterbox?

One thing worth adding to your walk round is the letterbox. Burglars use a trick called fishing, where they push a long hooked rod or bent wire through the flap to hook keys left on a hall table or hung by the door. It takes seconds, makes no noise, and leaves no broken glass, so it can go unnoticed for a while. Once they have your keys, they can drive off in the car or come back and let themselves in. Tonight, go outside and look through your own letterbox. Move any keys well out of reach, and if you want proper peace of mind, a letterbox cowl or a TS008 letterplate blocks the fishing attempt at the door.

According to what I have seen across the Waterside in my years fitting locks, keys left within arm’s reach of the front door are one of the easiest things a thief can take, which is why I always tell folk to move them well back.

Have you had a proper look at your outside lighting?

One thing folk always forget on a walk round is the dark corners outside. Burglars like the cover of darkness, so step out to the street and look back at your place the way a stranger might. Are your front and back doors lit, or is someone tampering with the lock in the shadows? Check the sides and any spot near a window that sits in the dark. A dead bulb or an overgrown bush giving cover is worth sorting tonight. In years across Southampton and the Waterside I have seen how a well-lit doorway puts people off having a go. If a light is out, that is your next quick job.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I do this home security check?

Ideally make it a nightly habit, checking doors, windows and gates before bed. A quick five-minute walk round each evening keeps things fresh in your mind. Then do a more thorough look every few months to spot worn locks, loose hinges or drifting alignment before they become a costly problem.

Why is turning the key on my uPVC door so important?

Lifting the handle alone leaves the door on the latch only, which offers very little resistance to anyone testing it. Turning the key engages the hooks and bolts up and down the frame, locking it properly. Always turn the key and remove it from the barrel at night for real security.

Do you charge to come out if my check reveals a problem?

No, there is no call-out fee at all, and I am available 24 hours across Southampton and the Waterside. If your evening walk round throws up something that worries you, just give me a shout. I will tell you honestly what needs doing.

Which part of my home should I worry about most?

Back doors and ground floor windows are often the weak points, as they face the garden and are hidden from the street. Side gates, sheds and garages matter too, since tools stored there can be used to break in. Check these first, then work round to the front of the house.
