What’s actually going on
Call-centre locksmith networks work like this. You ring a number that sounds local. It isn’t. Your call goes to a desk in a call centre. They take your details, charge you a booking fee upfront, then farm you out to a tradesman they’ve never met who may or may not be qualified. You pay again at the door, often double what you were quoted. If something goes wrong, you chase a faceless company that won’t answer.
A real local locksmith in Southampton, Hythe, Totton, Eastleigh or anywhere on the Waterside picks up because it’s his phone. He knows the roads. He can tell you how long it’ll take. He quotes over the phone without a call-out fee, and that’s the price you pay.
It isn’t just us saying it
In February 2026 the BBC secretly filmed one of these firms. The customer was quoted £40 on the phone. The bill came to £376.80. Another couple were charged £2,802.
And here’s the part that matters most. The customer was told the lock would have to be drilled. The Master Locksmiths Association looked at the same lock and said a competent locksmith could “bypass this lock in seconds, no damage whatsoever.”
Drilling wasn’t necessary. Drilling was the invoice.
Complaints to the MLA about overcharging went 280 in 2023, 350 in 2024, 402 in 2025. It is getting worse, not better, which is exactly why this page exists.

What to do (and what not to)
When you search, look for a locksmith with a real address, not just a postcode. Call them. Listen to how they answer. Do they know your area or are they reading from a script. Ask for a quote before they visit. If they won’t give you one, move on. Ask if they charge a call-out fee. A real operator doesn’t, and their prices are written down where anyone can see them.
Don’t pay anything upfront to a voice on the phone. Don’t give your full address to someone who can’t promise they’ll come. If they pressure you or dodge your questions, that’s your answer.
