An anti-snap lock is a cylinder designed to break at a weak point if someone tries to snap it out of your door. Without one, a thief can snap your lock barrel in seconds and walk straight in.
What’s actually going on
Lock snapping is a forced entry method. A burglar grabs the lock barrel and applies sudden downward pressure until it fractures. Once it snaps, the internal mechanism is exposed and can be manipulated from outside. The whole job takes under a minute. We’ve written about this before in our piece on lock snapping in Southampton, and the risk is real across the Waterside and beyond.
An anti-snap cylinder has a sacrificial section designed to snap before the lock does. When pressure is applied, that weak point breaks away instead of the main mechanism. The lock then deadbolts internally and cannot be opened from the outside, even by someone with the broken piece in their hand.
What to do, and what not to
First, check what you’ve got now. Most standard cylinders fitted in the 1990s and 2000s are snap-vulnerable. If your door is uPVC or composite, the risk is higher because the frame is softer and gives less resistance.
Do not assume your lock is safe just because it’s a well-known brand. Do not wait until something happens. Do start with a survey of your doors, especially the front and side entrances.
An upgrade to an anti-snap cylinder takes minutes and costs far less than fixing a burglary. We fit British Standard cylinders that meet BS 3621 or equivalent anti-snap specifications.
How we sort it on the day
We measure your current lock, source the right cylinder, and fit it without damaging your door. Non-destructive entry first, always. You get a new key, and your lock is secured against snap attacks. No drama, no extra visits.
