uPVC Door Dropped on Its Hinges: The Cheap Fix Before the Lockout

Bugsy has more than a decade fixing dropped uPVC doors across Southampton and the Waterside. Spot the signs early for a cheap fix. No call-out fee, 24 hours.

Quick answer: When a uPVC door drops, the lock bolts no longer line up with the keeps in the frame. You end up forcing the handle to drag them into place, and all that strain eventually snaps the mechanism. That is when a cheap hinge adjustment turns into a full lockout and a new gearbox.

If your uPVC door has started to feel like a proper wrestling match every time you lock it, I want you to stop for a minute before it lands you in real trouble. That heavy, dragging feeling is not just annoying. It is a warning sign. In more than a decade of fixing locks across Southampton and the Waterside, I have lost count of how many lockouts I have been called to that all started with a door quietly dropping on its hinges.

The good news is that catching it early usually means a cheap, quick fix rather than a broken mechanism and a call-out in the middle of the night. Let me walk you through what actually happens and how you can spot it before it turns into a proper headache.

Why does a dropped door cause the lock to fail?

A uPVC door is heavier than most people realise. All that weight hangs off two or three hinges down one side, and over the years those hinges take a hammering. Gravity does the rest. Slowly, without you really noticing, the door starts to sag towards the handle side. Just a couple of millimetres is enough to throw everything out.

Here is the part that matters. Your multipoint lock works by shooting bolts and hooks out of the edge of the door and into keeps fitted in the frame. When the door sits level, those bolts line up perfectly with the keeps and slide in like they should. When the door drops, the bolts no longer meet the keeps square on. You end up lifting the handle harder and harder, forcing the mechanism to drag metal against metal.

Every time you do that, you are putting strain on the gearbox inside the door. That gearbox is the weak point. Keep forcing it and one day it will simply snap, usually with the door locked shut and you standing outside in the rain. That is when a ten-minute adjustment becomes a full lock replacement.

The Dibden job that says it all

I got a call not long ago from a chap over in Dibden. His door had been stiff for weeks, but he had got into the habit of giving the handle a good shove and a lift to get it locked. He told me he thought that was just how uPVC doors were. One evening he pulled the handle up, heard a crack, and the whole thing went dead. Handle floppy, door jammed shut, family stuck inside.

By the time I arrived the gearbox had completely failed. Now, if he had rung me a fortnight earlier when it first started sticking, I would have adjusted the hinges, lined the door back up, and been done inside ten minutes for a small charge. Instead he needed a new multipoint mechanism, which is a bigger job and a bigger bill.

He was a good sport about it, but I could tell he was kicking himself. And honestly, he should not have been, because most people simply do not know that stiffness is fixable. That is exactly why I wanted to write this.

What can you check yourself before ringing me?

You do not need to be handy to spot the early signs. Have a proper look and feel next time you use the door. If you notice any of these, your door has probably dropped.

First, the handle. If you have to lift it hard, or lift and shove at the same time to get the bolts to throw, that is the tell. A healthy door locks with a smooth, light lift. Second, look at the gaps around the door when it is shut. If the gap is nice and even at the top but pinches tight at the bottom on the handle side, the door has sagged. Third, check for scrape marks or shiny worn spots on the frame keeps. That shiny metal is your bolts dragging where they should be gliding.

Some hinges you can adjust yourself with an allen key, and there are usually screws to shift the door up, down and sideways. If you are confident, tiny turns can bring it back into line. My honest advice though is to go gently, because over-adjusting can create new problems and knacker the seals. If you are not sure, leave it, and get someone who does it every week to sort it properly.

If the mechanism has already started grinding, the hinge adjustment might not be enough on its own, and you may be looking at some door mechanism repair in Southampton to put it fully right. Better to know before it fails than after.

Do not wait for the lockout

The whole point I am making is a simple one. A dropped door is cheap to fix and expensive to ignore. Ten minutes with the right tools versus a snapped gearbox and a locked-out family are two very different afternoons.

I cover Southampton and the whole SO45 Waterside, I am here 24 hours, and I never charge a call-out fee. So if your door is fighting you every time you lock it, do not keep forcing it. Give me a ring while it is still a small job, and let me line it back up before it lets you down.

How do you actually adjust a dropped uPVC door yourself?

Here is the bit most people miss. Pop the plastic caps off your hinges and have a look at what type you have. Modern flag hinges give you the most control, with separate screws for height, side to side and compression, while older butt hinges are more limited. To lift a dropped door, find the vertical adjustment screw and use a 4mm or 5mm Allen key. Turn it clockwise just one or two turns at a time, then shut the door and test the lock. Keep tweaking in small increments until the bolts slide into the keeps without a fight. Do all the hinges, and never force a warped door back into shape.

According to more than a decade of fixing uPVC doors across Southampton and the Waterside, catching a dropped door early and lifting it a couple of millimetres saves most people a snapped gearbox and a late-night lockout.

How do I actually lift a dropped uPVC door back up myself?

Most top guides walk you through the fix, and the current post does not, so here it is. First, work out your hinge type.
Flag hinges, the tall rectangular ones on newer doors, give you the most adjustment. Older butt hinges give you far less. On a flag hinge, pop off the plastic cap to find the vertical adjustment screw, then use a 4mm or 5mm Allen key and turn it clockwise to raise the door. Do all the hinges by the same small amount, a full turn or two each, then shut the door and test. Tweak until it stops dragging. If it still fights you after that, the hinge or gearbox is likely the culprit, so give me a bell. No call-out fee, 24 hours.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my uPVC door get harder to lock over time?

The door is heavy and slowly sags on its hinges as the years pass. When it drops even a couple of millimetres, the locking bolts no longer meet the keeps in the frame, so you end up lifting and shoving the handle to force everything into place.

Is a stiff handle really worth worrying about?

Yes, because every forced lift strains the gearbox inside the door. That gearbox is the weak point, and one day it will snap, usually with the door locked shut. Caught early, it is a quick, cheap hinge adjustment rather than a full mechanism replacement.

Can I check for a dropped door myself?

You can. If the handle needs a hard lift, the gap pinches tight at the bottom on the handle side, or you spot shiny worn marks on the frame keeps, your door has likely dropped. Go gently with any allen key adjustment, and call me if unsure.

What does it cost to call you out for a sticky door?

There is no call-out fee at all, and I am here 24 hours across Southampton and the SO45 Waterside. With more than a decade fixing locks locally, I would far rather line your door back up cheaply than replace a snapped mechanism later.
